CS2 Release Date: When Counter-Strike 2 Launched and What Changed

Counter-Strike 2 released on 27 September 2023. It arrived with no countdown and no pre-order — Valve shipped it as a free update that replaced CS:GO in place, on the same Steam app, the same afternoon it was announced as ready.

If you are looking for the release date of a game called "CS:GO 2", that game does not exist and never did. The sequel was named Counter-Strike 2, it is already out, and if you own CS:GO you have had it installed for years.

The timeline

The gap between announcement and release was about six months. Valve gave no release date during that window, which is why so much was written at the time guessing at one.

How the Limited Test actually worked

There was never a signup form, an application, an email list or a platform choice. This is worth stating plainly, because a great deal of what was published in 2023 described a process that did not exist — and some of it was on this page until we rewrote it.

Access to the Limited Test was granted by Valve, not requested. Selection was based on things Valve could already see on your account: recent playtime on official CS:GO servers, Steam account standing, and Trust Factor. Selected players got a "Counter-Strike 2 Limited Test" entry in their Steam library. There was nothing to opt into and no way to apply.

The test was PC only. Counter-Strike 2 has never been released on console.

From 1 September 2023 the restriction was lifted and anyone could play the test build, which in practice made the last month before launch an open beta.

What happened to CS:GO

CS:GO was not left running alongside its sequel. On 27 September the update landed on the existing app and the old client was gone — same Steam entry, same install, new game.

Everything you owned came with it. Skins, cases, keys, stickers, medals and knives carried over intact, which is why the market still trades finishes from cases that shipped a decade before CS2 existed. The economy did not restart, and nothing you had bought was invalidated. You can still browse and trade all of it exactly as before.

The one concession to the old game is a legacy build. Selecting the csgo_legacy beta branch in the game's Steam properties installs the final CS:GO client, but Valve's official matchmaking does not serve it — it is there for offline play and community servers, not for ranked.

What actually changed at launch

CS2 moved Counter-Strike from the Source engine to Source 2, which is the reason the change had to be a replacement rather than a patch.

• Sub-tick updates. The server no longer evaluates the world only on a fixed tick. It records the exact moment you fired or moved between ticks, which removed a long-standing class of "I definitely hit that" disputes.
• Volumetric smokes. Smoke grenades became dynamic objects that fill space realistically, react to gunfire and grenades, and are lit by the world rather than drawn as a flat sprite. This changed utility usage more than any other single feature.
• Rebuilt maps. Maps were split into tiers — some rebuilt from scratch in Source 2, some given a lighting and materials pass, some carried over largely intact.
• Reworked UI and buy menu, higher-fidelity audio, and a rebuilt rendering pipeline.

Community reaction

Launch was not universally smooth. The replacement-in-place meant players who were happy with CS:GO had no way to stay on it, and the early months drew complaints about performance regressions, missing features that had existed in CS:GO for years, and the state of anti-cheat. Several of those gaps were closed over the following seasons; the debate about others is still running.

What is not in dispute is that the transition held. The player base moved with the game rather than splitting across two clients, which is exactly what replacing the app in place was designed to achieve.
