How the TF2 item economy works
Team Fortress 2 has one of the oldest and deepest cosmetic economies in gaming. - on an Unusual, the particle effect usually matters more than the hat wearing it. Effects from older, retired series are consistently the expensive half of the item.
- Popularity
- items that suit a commonly played class, or that show up in well-known loadouts, hold demand far better than obscure ones.
- Supply and demand
- when a crate series floods the market, prices fall. When supply dries up, they climb. This is the single biggest short-term driver.
- Events and updates
- seasonal events and game updates move prices in both directions, sometimes sharply and sometimes only for a few weeks.
